The Vanderbilt at South Beach tailors every event to the finest detail, with an array of unique amenities and services. Guests can drape themselves in custom gowns, indulge in elaborate hors d’oeuvres and pastries, even marvel at fireworks from the waterfront.

[NY & NJ] Pro-Bono Placement: Covenant House – Director of Human Resources

As the New York and New Jersey areas struggle to recover from the wreckage caused by Hurricane Sandy this week, non-profits are rushing to help their neighbors in need.

Considered one of the area’s most vital charities, Covenant House provides shelter for homeless, at-risk, and runaway youth. Founded in Manhattan’s lower east side 30 years ago, this organization has since broadened its outreach across the U.S. and in Latin America, helping nearly 80,000 children and teens each year.

In the aftermath of this devastating storm, the shelter in Atlantic City sustained considerable damage, and the staff of both the Newark and New York shelters have had tremendous difficulty commuting to work. Nevertheless, generous volunteers continue their steady stream of support, working around-the-clock to provide warm meals and a safe haven for hundreds of refugees.

The Alfus Group is proud to contribute to Covenant House’s team, placing their Director of Human Resources earlier this month.

To help their ongoing effort, text KIDS to 80888 to donate $10. You can also visit Covenant House’s Emergency Relief Effort Page to make a donation in the amount of your choice. Donations of any amount will help these tireless volunteers continue to rally support and provide emergency aid in the days and weeks to come.

[CO] The Stanley Hotel: Executive Chef, Financial Controller

October is hauntingly beautiful at The Stanley Hotel, with elaborate decor, themed parties, and regular ghost tours of the estate and its underground tunnels. Their now famous Halloween Shining Ball and Murder Mystery Dinner events take place this year on Friday October 26th, and Saturday October 27th.

Fans of Stephen King’s horror novels should request room 217, the very room that originally inspired King to write The Shining. This room is said to be haunted by the ghost of a hotel maid, as well as a small boy calling for his nanny. Sometimes guests staying that room also encounter extra housekeeping services, having their things put away or unpacked.  [1]

The Stanley Hotel served as the original inspiration for Stephen King’s The Shining

Each of the 138 guest rooms have reportedly had their own haunted encounters. No need to be too scared, though; The staff ensures these are harmless “extra experiences,” such as being tucked in at night, or hearing Flora Stanley playing her piano in the Music Room.

Beyond the haunted history, this majestic 102-year-old Colorado hotel offers unique excursions such as hiking through the beautiful terrain of the Rocky Mountain National Park, browsing local artists’ outdoor gallery in the Stanley Sculpture Garden, even releasing Monarch butterflies into the wild with the Butterfly Encounter.

The Alfus Group has worked on several searches for The Stanley over the years, including their Executive Chef and Financial Controller positions.   It’s a lovely property and premier destination for nature lovers and historians, all year round.

[NYC] The Roosevelt Hotel: Director of Catering

The Roosevelt Hotel opened its doors at the height of New York City’s roaring ’20s era. With elite clientele and a rich ambiance, it was hailed as the “Grand Dame of Madison Avenue.”

Historic events and major motion pictures have been hosted here for nearly a century, solidifying The Roosevelt’s stature as an American cultural icon. Their rooms have provided the elegant backdrop for award-winning films such as Wall Street, Malcolm X, and French Connection. It was famously home to Governor Thomas Dewey’s official city business, as well as the headquarters for his presidential campaign. [1] And in 1929, Guy Lombardo established the  tradition of playing  “Auld Lang Syne” on New Years Eve, sparked by his 1929 broadcast from The Roosevelt Grill.

Emerging from a meticulous restoration, this stately hotel has both the charm and grandeur of the Prohibition era, with all the amenities of the 21st century. It boasts over 1,000 guest rooms, classic and refined, with an attentive staff and uncompromising service. It’s also a signature destination for New York functions, offering 30,000 square feet of flexible meeting space.

The Roosevelt’s catering and events staff have consistently been recognized for excellence, awarded with The Gold Key, Best of the East and the Pinnacle Successful Meetings awards. [2] The Alfus Group had the opportunity to contribute to this award-winning team, placing their new Director of Catering in July, 2012.
