When and How Should You Apply Online?

Published on June 15, 2012, by in Resources & Tools.

“Stop sending your resumes into cyberspace. It’s a black hole,” advises Ellen Gordon Reeves, Harvard graduate and author of Can I Wear My Nose Ring to the Interview? Finding, Landing and Keeping Your First Real Job. [1] This is true for many online job boards, even the industry-specific ones for niche markets. They are over-saturated with response, so it’s not always a viable option.

So which online resources will help you? That largely depends on your level of experience:

(Note: These suggestions don’t necessarily apply to Contract and Freelance workers.)

Entry Level or Internship:

When: Consider the cyclical nature of these jobs. There will be surges of applicants right around graduation time. To stand out, start the job search early, and follow up your submission with a formal email and phone call. Show that you’re self-starting, and eager to work for them.

How: Almost any means possible. There is more competition, but there are also more options. You’re new to the game, so cast a wide net.

Junior and Intermediate Level:

When: Some people panic when they’re suddenly jobless, or may be desperate to leave their current situation, but it’s important to take your time. Hold out for the best option, not just the first option. The choices you make now can have a huge impact on your career opportunities down the line.

How: You can afford to be more selective. Tread with caution when applying to job boards. Instead, reach out to recruiters, target specific companies, and ask for tips from industry colleagues.

Senior and Executive Level:

When: By now, you’re well aware of when it’s time to move on. Just follow your gut.

How: Recruiters and industry networking are the best options. Never let your resume float around online; it’s important to control who sees your information.

At any level, just be aware of your status, your value, and the search tools at your disposal. Make wise choices to continue building a solid resume.
