Dapper gentlemen with classic one-liners bring bawdy hilarity to a black-tie setting. Legendary roasts of the Hollywood elite have made headlines at the Friars Club for over a century.
Built in 1909, this historic venue combines vintage charm with modern luxury. Every event is a timeless and elegant affair, every room an homage to an American icon.
Membership marks a show business milestone. Vibrant young talent are inducted each year, joining the ranks of A-list entertainers. Prominent members include Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Ed Sullivan, Johnny Carson, Lucille Ball, Billy Crystal, Rob Reiner, and Richard Pryor, just to name a very scant few.
An all-male club for many years, the Friars evolved with the times and welcomed Liza Minelli as their first female member in 1988. Of course, this didn’t stop other women from joining in on the fun. At her husband Humphrey Bogart’s roast in ’55, Lauren Bacall sent along a tape to play for the boys: “This is Lauren Bacall, the uninvited guest, you rat bastards.” Phyllis Diller went so far as to dress like a man, sneaking into Sid Caesar’s 1983 roast. She came clean afterward, tongue firmly in cheek, admitting, “It was the funniest and dirtiest thing I’ve ever heard in my life.”
While the hallways erupt with raucous laughter, the Friars Foundation is focused on charity. Since its inception, the foundation has granted hundreds of scholarships to performing arts students; Many of these kids have since found success on Broadway and on the silver screen. Every year, a holiday raffle is also held to benefit the Sunshine Committee. This group offers entertainment and companionship to senior citizens and children’s centers all over New York.
The Alfus Group is proud to work with the Friars Club team, placing their Director of Banquets in November, 2012. Always prestigious, never pretentious, their events are unparalleled — and unforgettable.
