Featured Client: The New Yorker Hotel, NYC

1920′s New York is on everyone’s lips, following Baz Luhrmann’s revamp of The Great Gatsby. And while the city has lived a thousand lifetimes since then, a few special spots keep that vintage charm alive.

The New Yorker Hotel is an historical icon, pre-dating both the Empire State and Chrysler buildings. At 43 stories and 2,500 rooms, it was a modern marvel of the late 1920′s, a feat of architecture that symbolized the booming industrial revolution.

Fast-forward a century, and this stately hotel is still standing strong. It’s had a few facelifts over the years, modernized and upgraded with the latest technology and amenities. But one thing has and always will be preserved: that classic Art Deco appeal.

The Alfus Group is proud to be a key player in The New Yorker’s next chapter, placing several senior department heads since December, 2012 — including the General Manager, Director of Sales and Marketing and Director of Finance.

For anyone enamored with New York City nostalgia, there’s no better place than The New Yorker hotel.

Featured Client: Hudson Hotel & Hudson Common, NYC

It’s officially rooftop season in New York. Tequila Park, the Hudson Hotel’s very own private park space, travels south of the border with modern Mexican cuisine. They’re mixing fresh fruit margaritas daily, stocked with ice-cold Mexican beer, an array of mescals, and over 40 varieties of world-class tequila, as the name would suggest.

Moving indoors to Hudson Common, guests find a lively American beer hall, recommended by Zagat as one of “8 NYC Beer Bars to Try Right Now”.

Featuring a great selection of local craft brews and soda-shop-inspired specialty cocktails, the spirited menu also indulges in “Common” American classic dishes. For the more adventurous eaters, the creative culinary team peppers in fun new “Uncommon” twists on the traditional fare.

The Alfus Group is proud to collaborate alongside the Hudson Hotel team, placing their Executive Sous Chef.

Designed by Philippe Starck, the Hudson Hotel embodies simplicity and minimalism for a modern crowd. Travelers who need a low-key environment in a central locale need look no further than the Hudson Hotel. Guest rooms and suites are crisp and chic, while service is attentive and never pretentious. But the Hudson isn’t just for the transient, locals love this relaxed atmosphere, too.

Are you shaking like a dead fish?

Published on April 29, 2013, by in Resources & Tools.

So you’ve prepared tirelessly for your upcoming interview. Practiced your posture, rehearsed all the answers, and bought a fancy new suit. You’re about to make the one and only first impression, and it all starts with a handshake.

Mind your grip to avoid these common mistakes:

  • Sweaty Palms: You’re nervous. And frankly, it’s gross. Try to calm yourself, or at the very least, bring kleenex.
  • Close Talker: You’ve grabbed their hand and pulled them close. Way too close. Who’s the one in charge here? Mind your boundaries.
  • The Politician: You shake with both hands, like a senator or a used car salesman. Ease up on the schmooze, or people won’t trust you.
  • Brush Off: You’ve quickly grasped and released, before the handshake is over. It’s awkward, dismissive, and awkward.
  • Dead Fish: A limp and lifeless hand is an employers worst nightmare! It says you’re passive, weak, can’t assert yourself. This is a deal breaker, especially if you’re going for that executive position that requires strength in leadership.
  • Bone-Crusher: Ow! There’s no reason in the world to ever use the death grip. If you’ll destroy their hand, what will you do to their business?

Regardless of how quick you are on your feet, how sharp you look in that brand new suit, or how glowing your professional references will be, that handshake sets the tone for the meeting. So keep the grip firm, appropriate, and confident.
